The U.S. Mint was officially established in 1792 by Congress under the Coinage Act. However, coins like the Fugio cent were already being produced in America prior to its creation.
The first facility was constructed in Philadelphia, and since its modernization in 1969, it has become the largest of the Mint’s four locations. The Mint also operates facilities in Denver, San Francisco, and West Point, New York, which doubles as a military installation. Additionally, it manages the world-renowned bullion depository at Fort Knox in Kentucky.
