      U.S. Mint

The U.S. Mint was officially established in 1792 by Congress under the Coinage Act. However, coins like the Fugio cent were already being produced in America prior to its creation.

The  first facility was constructed in Philadelphia, and since its modernization in 1969, it has become the largest of the Mint’s four locations. The Mint also operates facilities in Denver, San Francisco, and West Point, New York, which doubles as a military installation. Additionally, it manages the world-renowned bullion depository at Fort Knox in Kentucky.

The U.S. Mint operates five distinct facilities, each playing a vital role in producing and safeguarding the nation’s coinage and bullion. Here’s a closer look at these renowned locations:

      Philadelphia Mint

As the oldest U.S. Mint site, the Philadelphia Mint serves as its central hub. This facility is where master die creation and coin design come to life. Visitors can enjoy an immersive experience, touring the refinery to learn about the minting process and the Refinery’s storied history, much like the Royal Mint in the U.K.

      Denver Mint

Established in 1863 as an assay office to certify gold, the Denver Mint became a full-fledged mint in 1906. Today, it primarily produces circulation coinage and continues its legacy as a key player in U.S. coin production.

      San Francisco Mint

Built in 1854 to support the California Gold Rush, the San Francisco Mint has faced challenges like earthquakes and fires. However, resilient rebuilds have kept it operational. Today, it focuses on creating proof coinage, a favorite among collectors and investors alike.

      West Point Mint, New York

Originally a bullion depository in 1938, West Point transitioned into a full mint in 1988. It produces all American Eagle coins and remains a secure bullion vault. This site’s rich history as a former military stronghold adds to its unique identity.

      Fort Knox, Kentucky

Perhaps the most famous of the U.S. Mint’s sites, Fort Knox is a secure bullion depository. Housing a vast reserve of gold and silver, it’s renowned for its impenetrable security. Featured in the James Bond classic Goldfinger, Fort Knox symbolizes the ultimate in precious metal protection.
