1 oz Australian Kangaroo Gold Coin – Nugget 1992 Common Wallaroo
The 1992 Australian Nugget is an early issue of The Perth Mint’s famous gold bullion series, struck more than three decades ago when the coin still carried its original name – “The Australian Nugget”. Its reverse features the Common Wallaroo, a design used for the 1 oz coin in 1992 only. With a declared mintage of just 111,922 coins and its original square Perth Mint capsule, it is a piece with real appeal for collectors as well as investors.
What Makes It Different from Today’s Kangaroo
- Original series name: The reverse reads “THE AUSTRALIAN NUGGET” – the name the series carried before it became known as the Australian Kangaroo.
- One-year design: The Common Wallaroo by Alex Lumsden was struck only in 1992. In the early years each issue showed a different macropod species.
- Queen Elizabeth II: The obverse carries the Queen’s third portrait by Raphael Maklouf, instead of King Charles III on today’s coins.
- Different dimensions: 32.10 mm in diameter, compared to 32.60 mm for the current 1 oz Kangaroo.
- Two-tone frosted finish: The frosted wallaroo stands out against a mirror-like sunburst background – a finish that was unusual for a bullion coin at the time.
- Lower mintage: 111,922 coins declared out of a maximum of 250,000.

Obverse Design
The obverse shows the crowned portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Raphael Maklouf, with the inscriptions “ELIZABETH II”, “AUSTRALIA” and “100 DOLLARS”.
Reverse Design
The reverse depicts a Common Wallaroo – a member of the kangaroo family, larger than a wallaby but smaller than a kangaroo – standing in front of a radiating sunburst, with the words “COMMON WALLAROO” beneath it. Around the rim are the inscriptions “THE AUSTRALIAN NUGGET”, “1 OZ.”, “9999 GOLD” and the year “1992”.
Why the Square Capsule?
The square capsule is the original packaging made by The Perth Mint for the early Nugget issues. The shape itself has no special function – it is simply how the Mint packaged its coins at the time. What matters is that it is original: it has protected the frosted finish from fingerprints and handling for over 30 years and shows the coin has been kept in its original state, which collectors value. We recommend keeping the coin in its capsule.
