History of the Angel Design
Augustin Dupré, chief engraver of the French Mint during the Revolution, created the Genius figure for the coinage of the First Republic in the early 1790s. After the fall of Napoleon III in 1870, the new Third Republic brought the design back for its gold coins of 20, 50 and 100 Francs. The 20 Francs piece was struck in large numbers, partly to help France pay the war indemnity owed to Germany after the Franco-Prussian War. In total, around 86 million coins were minted.
Design Details
Obverse:
The winged Genius stands writing the Constitution on a tablet. On the left is a fasces topped by the hand of justice, and on the right a Gallic rooster, the national symbol of France. The legend reads RÉPUBLIQUE FRANÇAISE, with Dupré’s signature below.
Reverse:
The denomination 20 FRANCS and the year of minting are framed by a wreath and surrounded by the motto LIBERTÉ ÉGALITÉ FRATERNITÉ. The mint mark A for Paris appears below the wreath. The edge carries the inscription DIEU PROTÈGE LA FRANCE.
Year and Condition
